Howard R. Carr

Howard R. Carr is a Washington, D.C.–based painter and sculptor whose artistic life spans more than five decades. His career has been shaped by the daily discipline of working in the studio and a sustained curiosity about what painting and sculpture can express.

From the earlier years of his practice, Carr pursued an artistic life through observation, experimentation, and commitment to making work. Across the decades, his interests have ranged from portraiture to abstraction and the exploration of different materials. Rather than remaining within a single style, he has continued to investigate the relationship between subject, form, and process.

His long working life offers a perspective that cannot be reduced to a single exhibition or moment of recognition. It is a record of persistence and development, with each period of work contributing to the next.

Recent editorial attention has included coverage in Tussle Magazine and Washington DC Magazine, including a feature on his half-century in the Georgetown studio. His work has also been presented in the context of The Long View, an exhibition bringing together three distinct artistic careers.
